Teen carer launches petition for more help

AN 18-year-old carer who struggled through her A-levels has launched a campaign for more support for other teenagers facing the same problem.

A day in Kirstie’s life

Most mornings I wake up around 7am, then I go downstairs and clean up the living and the kitchen from the day before.

By this time it’s about 8am and time to make my mum’s breakfast.

After I have taken that up to her I do the washing up.

There are always things that need to be done in between making the breakfast and preparing lunch.

“I’M really proud of him. He does a really good job and I don’t know how I’d manage if he wasn’t helping me.”

 

Lisa Calvert, 38, from Wisbech Road, South Lynn, is cared for by her son, Callum Britton, aged nine. Mrs Calvert suffers with type-2 diabetes, ankylosing spondylitis – a form of inflammatory arthritis in the spine – and depression.

She was also diagnosed with conversion disorder in 2005, a condition in which people experience neurological symptoms such as numbness, blindness, paralysis or fits without a neurological cause.

The unveiling of new accomodition based in Carlogie House grounds was opened officially on Wednesday morning by David Leslie ex Scotland rugby player who also handed over a giant wooden spoon. It was given by the Wooden Spoon childrens rugby charity. Pictured with David, fron centre, are charity members chid carers and invited guests.

YOUNG carers visiting a respite centre in Carnoustie received a real treat last week when they got a new caravan, writes Johnston Ralston.

 

The Carlogie House Centre for the Princess Royal Trust East Ayrshire Carers has proven so popular with young carers that extra accommodation was required.
