YOUNG carers visiting a respite centre in Carnoustie received a real treat last week when they got a new caravan, writes Johnston Ralston.

The Carlogie House Centre for the Princess Royal Trust East Ayrshire Carers has proven so popular with young carers that extra accommodation was required.

The money for the caravan was donated by Wooden Spoon in Scotland and fund-raisers from the Edinburgh depot of courier TNT.

It is hoped that the caravan will add an exciting camping style element to some of the five-day action-packed residential respite holidays for around 400 young carers every year.

Employees from the express delivery giant will be hosted by Charlie Bryden, chairman of Wooden Spoon Region Scotland, when they visit the young people’s caravan as part of Seeing Is Believing (SIB), a pioneering initiative being championed by the logistics company and the charity.

The staff will take time off from their working day to see, first hand, how the money they raise has helped fund the facilities.

Gavin Hastings, honorary president of Wooden Spoon Scotland, said: “Wooden Spoon is very proud of the support we are able to provide to East Ayrshire Carers Centre and would also like to recognise the assistance and sterling fundraising efforts of the TNT Edinburgh Depot staff.”
