The county’s busiest hospital is to become the first in the UK to open an emergency department (ED) specifically for the elderly.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) announced innovative plans to transform the way it delivers emergency care and will open the first A&E dedicated to patients over the age of 80.

From the end of November, when a patient over 80 years old arrives at the NNUH ED, they will go straight to the older people’s ED, where there will be a multi-disciplinary team consisting of ED consultants, consultant geriatricians, and emergency and older people’s medicine nurses waiting to provide care for them.

Currently around 50 patients a day aged 80 or over visit A&E, and the new department will cater for around this number.

‘I book home care for my mum online’

Louisa and her mum, Peggy, book home care using an online service

Louisa Bravery’s mum, Peggy, lives in the family home and loves everyday life with her grandchildren.

But she needs a little personal care when other members of the family are out at school or work.

Louisa wasn’t sure where to turn to organise things but discovered she could book her mother’s care using an online service.

That makes it easy to plan care flexibly depending on when Peggy might be alone at home.

“I just log in via the internet using my phone and just select the number of hours and the day and the time I want the carer to come. It’s really quick and also the payment’s all done online,” Louisa says.

The service is provided by CERA, the brainchild of Dr Ben Maruthappu, who formerly had a senior policymaking role at NHS England.

Free hospital parking for carers of long-term patients

By Leicester Mercury

Parking charges have been scrapped for carers visiting long-term patients at the city’s three hospitals.

The main carer of someone in hospital for more than six weeks will qualify for the free pass.

Permits will apply at Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield and Leicester General hospitals.

The move has been welcomed by carers and health campaigners.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trusts is one of the only hospital trusts in the country to offer the concession for all types of patients.

Similar schemes operate in other hospitals but are often restricted to particular patient groups such as those being treated for cancer, kidney problems and blood related conditions.
