Battle launched to end isolation of rural elderly

Facing the problem of social isolation among the elderly in parts of rural North Yorkshire

Steps being taken to try to tackle the problem of social isolation among the elderly in parts of rural North Yorkshire are to be discussed by health chiefs at a meeting this week.

The county has a large number of older people living in the county with an estimated 20.3 per cent of the population of the county aged 65 or over in 2010, compared with a national average of 16.5 per cent.

In Harrogate and its surrounding rural district, health bosses say 27 per cent of the population is aged 60 and over compared to the national average of 22.4 per cent. With figures for the over-65s in this part of the county set to rise by 19 per cent by 2021, health chiefs will meet this week to discuss a project that aims to tackle the issue.

Autism-Friendly Panto Performance Confirmed

Theatregoers with special needs and their families are getting the chance to attend a special performance of the pantomime.
 
Producers of this year’s Norwich Theatre Royal festive spectacular Cinderella have given the green light to a relaxed performance at 5.30pm on Wednesday January 15 next year.
 
While the show itself will be the same as the rest of the performances, there will be a number of special facilities specifically for theatre-goers with autism, their families and friends, and anyone else who prefers to attend a more relaxed show.
 
These include:

  • A more relaxed atmosphere meaning patrons can move around, and enter and leave as they wish through the show.
  • A break-out room where patrons can take a break from the show.
  • The auditorium lights will remain on a low-level throughout the performance
  • A specially-extended interval of 30 minutes

Borough carers centre boosted by £1k police cash

A BOROUGH care and respite centre has been boosted by a £1,000 donation by West Midlands Police.

Crossroads Care, based in the Pensnett Trading Estate provides free trained carer support and respite for disabled or sensory impaired borough residents, helping over 140 families every week with care facilities in their own home.
