Autism-Friendly Panto Performance Confirmed

Theatregoers with special needs and their families are getting the chance to attend a special performance of the pantomime.

Producers of this year’s Norwich Theatre Royal festive spectacular Cinderella have given the green light to a relaxed performance at 5.30pm on Wednesday January 15 next year.

While the show itself will be the same as the rest of the performances, there will be a number of special facilities specifically for theatre-goers with autism, their families and friends, and anyone else who prefers to attend a more relaxed show.

These include:

    • A more relaxed atmosphere meaning patrons can move around, and enter and leave as they wish through the show.
    • A break-out room where patrons can take a break from the show.
    • The auditorium lights will remain on a low-level throughout the performance
    • A specially-extended interval of 30 minutes

This performance will also be signed for the hard-of-hearing and audio-described for people with sight issues, with booking opening on Tuesday April 2, which is World Autism Awareness Day.

This particular performance will only be available to book by phone on 01603 63 00 00 where our specially trained box office staff will be happy to answer any questions and give more information about the show.

Matthew Piper, the theatre’s Front-Of-House Director, said: “We are very pleased to be able to offer this special performance of Cinderella. The pantomime production team and our technical staff have worked very closely with us to enable this to happen.

“We encourage patrons and their families to get in touch with us ahead of the special performance if they require further information, and members of staff will be available to welcome everyone two hours before the show if they need a bit of extra time to settle into the theatre.

“We were also keen to make sure this did not cost any more than any other performance of Cinderella, so the normal ticket prices and accompanying reductions, where relevant, will be available for this special relaxed show.”

Meanwhile the producers of Cinderella, sponsored this year by Almary Green, are promising another pantomime packed with fun for all the family from December 17 to January 19, with all-star casting to be confirmed in the weeks ahead.
