Activists and academics raise questions over NHS England project

Learning disability activists and academics have accused NHS England of failing to involve people with experience of services and their families in the development of a new group tasked with cutting the use of inappropriate hospital placements.

Yesterday NHS England announced that it had appointed Sir Stephen Bubb, chief executive of charity leaders network ACEVO, to head a group dedicated to ‘co-commissioning’ solutions to cut inappropriate placements. The group will report its findings in October.

For many children and young people, particularly those with learning difficulties, attending a theatre performance can be a confusing and stressful experience. Sara Ryan from the University of Warwick has described the experience of many parents taking their children into such public places as being “contingent, unsatisfactory and incomplete”.

PARENTS at a special primary school in Whetstone who have had all council funding for its ten-day summer break scheme withdrawn say they are “desperate” to be be able to ask councillors to cancel the cut.

Oakleigh School in Oakleigh Road North, which caters for children with severe and complex learning and physical difficulties was one of ten service providers to have their short-break funding cut by the council in April.
