MP visits Hackney primary school for launch of new learning scheme
DIANE ABBOTT visited a primary school to help launch a new scheme in London which will give iPads to children with learning disabilities.
The MP for Hackney North & Stoke Newington, attended Grasmere Primary School in Hackney, east London last week Friday (December 6) to raise awareness of the project.
The initiative is the brainchild of Hearts & Minds Challenge – a charity dedicated to helping families of children with autism.
By donating old mobile phones to the charity, they can go towards an exchange for an iPad. The charity needs to collect at least 185 old, broken, damaged or unwanted mobile phones in exchange for a brand new iPad with autism-friendly apps and features.
Grasmere Primary School is well known for its inclusivity for children with complex special educational needs and its close working relationship with external professionals supporting children.

CUSTOMERS who regularly use a cafe staffed by people from an adult day centre have spoken of their disappointment as it is due to close next Friday.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council decided to close Upsall Hall in July claiming that dwindling user numbers meant the centre was no longer viable.
However, many members of the public who use the centre feel let down by the decision.
Sheila Harvey, who used the centre for more than 30 years, campaigned tirelessly to save it from closure but the appeal fell on deaf ears.
Hampshire constabulary launches new poster to help disabled

HAMPSHIRE Constabulary has launched a new poster to help adults with learning disabilities call the police.
In line with Mencap’s Learning Disability Week (August 19-25) the new poster aims to be easier to read and explains when to dial 101 and 999.
Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “Some of the feedback we’ve received is that often people with a learning disability aren’t sure when to call 101 and when to call 999. “I hope that this poster, alongside the work we’ve been doing to engage with communities affected by disability, will encourage people to come forward to report problems they’re experiencing, demonstrate that the police are here to help and that we can make a difference.”
