A MUM who has spent 18 months fighting to retain her severely disabled son’s care package has forced Bournemouth council to back down.

Lorraine Zavadil, 53, took on the council after it originally tried to cut the budget for her son Tarik’s care package by almost 70 per cent.

This would have meant that 28-year-old Tarik, who has congenital cerebral palsy, epilepsy and profound learning disabilities, is registered blind and is unable to speak, would have been unable to keep his current carers, some of whom have worked with him for over 10 years.

The winning bids included the Epilepsy Society which would use nearly £300,000 to promote early interventions for people with epilepsy in hard-to-reach groups, the Motor Neurone Disease Association would use just over £500,000 to turn its wheelchair provision into a national service, and Maternity Action will spend its £68,000 on supporting women and their employers to breastfeed on their return to work after maternity leave.

Other charities benefiting from the cash injection include the Disabled Living Foundation which will use £200,350 to deliver an online library of small electronic aids which people can try before they buy, and the Spinal Injuries Association which has won nearly £43,500 to help educate health professionals how to avoid preventable conditions such as pressure sores and urinary infections.

A COUPLE have withdrawn their severely disabled daughter from supported accommodation after a “catalogue of unkept promises”.

In one incident, they claim carers failed to contact Bill and Jean Butt before leaving their 47-year-old daughter to wake up in hospital in pain, among strangers and unable to make herself understood.

Mr and Mrs Butt said they had done everything they could to work with care providers Dimensions and given them every chance but no longer had any faith that staffing problems would be resolved.
