Care homes given five star ratings fail key standards

Care home Concerns have been raised about the consistency of independent assessments of care homes.

Care homes with five-star ratings are receiving premium fees despite not meeting essential standards set out by the care regulator.

Local authorities pay higher fees to care homes awarded top ratings.

But critics say this is a “cheque book system” open to any home prepared to pay for a rating.

The Care Quality Commission advises people to visit homes and check their most recent CQC inspection report before making a decision on care.

‘I think it’s amazing how committed care staff are, who we don’t deserve to have’

Pay concerns are leading to around 200 home carers used by a council to look after vulnerable people to leave their jobs each year.

Norfolk County Council spends £34m a year on using 25 main agencies to provide care to around 5,800 older and disabled people in their homes.

But people who use the service have raised concerns about the quality and continuity of the care they receive, due to staff leaving on a regular basis.

OVERTON has been asked to take part in a project to provide information to elderly residents.

Hampshire County Council ran a pilot of the Village Agent project in 14 villages, and has now given a grant to continue and extend it across rural Hampshire during the next three years.

It works by recruiting volunteers to offer four-to-six hours of their time a week to help increase and improve the way older people find and benefit from, information and advice.

A representative from the project spoke to Overton Parish Council and said: “Elderly people don’t necessarily get on the compu-ter very much so when they need information they have difficulty finding it. It’s things like care facilities, or getting a blue badge. Sometimes they don’t even realise they exist.”
