New dementia support service opens in Cromer

 A new telephone service aims to help people find out what support is available to them when a relative is diagnosed with dementia.

The scheme, which was launched at Danbury Lodge, in Cromer, yesterday, will give people the opportunity to speak to someone for advice.

It is hoped that the service will benefit carers who struggle to use the internet, individuals living with dementia and local businesses.

Laura Lodge, head of the dementia unit, said: “I think there is a big demand for this, especially in our local area. The idea came from carers who said that when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia, they don’t know who to talk to or where to get advice from.”

East Coast Truckers take youngsters on a special day out

 With a chorus of honking horns and lots of smiling faces, a convoy of trucks set off from County Hall, in Norwich, for an extra special day out.

The East Coast Truckers children’s convoy took place today, and saw more than 60 trucks take scores of excited youngsters on a trip from Norwich to Pleasurewood Hills and Great Yarmouth.

They were also joined by members of the emergency services for the 70-vehicle procession which created a great spectacle on the county’s roads.

The East Coast Truckers have become famous for the annual event – now in its 31st year – which aims to give children with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds a day they will never forget.

Lack of nurses in Norfolk for dementia prompts appeal

The Wymondham Dementia Support Group has launched an appeal to get together 17,000 knitted and crocheted forget-me-nots, one for every person in Norfolk living with dementia.

The group’s organiser, Dianne Fernee, said the campaign was to highlight the lack of Admiral nurses, who are specialists in dementia.

Mrs Fernee said: “Admiral nurses are a lifeline for people with dementia, but there are only two of them serving 17,000 people, which isn’t nearly enough.
