TERRY PRATCHETT, who suffers from a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease, has launched a new blog about dementia with a funny and honest look at funding and awareness of the disease.The novelist accused the Government of “pussy footing” around dementia and insisted a huge investment needed to be made to find a cure for the degenerative condition.The top-selling author, famous for his hilarious fantasy series of Discworld novels, said that technology and a compassionate care system help “paper over the cracks” but scientific advances are key.

In February 2002, my wife Anne, who was 52 and a care assistant, had been having problems with remembering things at work. There followed a long diagnostic process, considering all the possible causes, but she was finally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in November 2002 after an MRI scan.

New research, led by the University of Southampton, has shown that people in debt are three times more likely to have a mental health problem than those not in debt.

There is currently around £156 billion in unsecured debt such as credit cards in the UK, of which the average family owes more than £11,000. Levels of debt have increased in recent years due to the economic recession and are predicted to increase further.
