Long hospital waits ‘on the increase’

It is unfair to leave people waiting so long if they are in pain.

The number of people facing “long waits” for hospital treatment in England is rising, NHS figures show.

Under the NHS Constitution, patients have a right to be seen in 18 weeks.

But there are currently 236,155 on the waiting list who have waited longer than that – a rise of 8.5% in a year, according to official data. Nearly half have waited more than six months.

The nurse pulled back the covers and I recoiled instinctively. It wasn’t so much the sight of the raw flesh that made me feel ill as the smell.

“It must have been like this for months,” said the nurse. “How can they claim to be caring for this poor woman when they leave her to develop sores like this?”

Good to see unpaid carers receiving recognition!

The Carer’s Award

The award will be given to an unpaid carer who in the opinion of the judges can demonstrate commitment and perseverance in the care they give. Six million people a year provide unpaid care to either a relative, friend or child who is ill, frail or disabled. This award seeks to acknowledge and celebrate the dedication that carers give to those they care for and the incredible contribution they make.
