Doctors could face GMC action for ignoring poor care

Doctors could face disciplinary action if they “walk by” and ignore poor patient care by other doctors or health professionals, under new General Medical Council guidelines coming into force today.

The new rules mean they may be held to account for failing to raise concerns about sub-standard treatment even if they are not involved. Doctors will be seen as responsible for the “entire welfare” of patients.

Chief executive Niall Dickson said it followed examples such as the scandal at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, where up to 1,200 “excess deaths” occurred due to poor care.

Residents of a Lowestoft care home were moved out yesterday evening because of the state of the cleanliness of residents’s rooms.

The 15 residents of Orme House Residential Care Home have been relocated to other homes in the area by Suffolk County Council.

The move came after an inspection by environmental health officers by Waveney District Council.

The officers had visited the building after someone contacted the district council over concerns over health and safety issues linked to wiring and electrical equipment.

Phil Harris, district council spokesman said; “However on entering environmental health officers realised there were far greater concerns environmental health concerns.

GPs ‘to prescribe health apps’

GPs could soon offer their patients free smartphone apps to help with managing health conditions.

The Department of Health says its initiative is the “next step” in the drive to give patients more control over their own health.

The apps could help diabetics keep a check on their blood sugar and patients monitor their own blood pressure.
