Disabled benefit claimants in the north of England will be the first to receive the Government’s new personal independence payment (PIP).

Ministers are scrapping the disability living allowance handout for two million people of working age and replacing it with the PIP which will involve an individual assessment in a bid to cut down on overpayments.

However amid wrangling as the Welfare Reform Bill went through Parliament earlier this year, the Department of Work and Pensions agreed to stagger its introduction.

MPs Reverse Lords’ Welfare Reform Defeats

A showdown between MPs and peers looms after the Commons overturned seven Lords defeats on the Government’s welfare reforms.

MPs voted by big majorities to restore some of the most controversial measures in the Welfare Reform Bill, with a majority of 82 for the controversial cap on benefits.

But in one vote – on the so-called “bedroom tax” – the coalition’s majority slumped to 42, as 14 Liberal Democrat MPs and two Tories, Gordon Henderson and Andrew Percy, rebelled.

Disabled campaigners block central London over Welfare Reform Bill

Sunday 29 January 2012

Wheelchair users brought one of central London’s busiest junctions to a standstill by chaining themselves together in the middle of Oxford Circus, blocking the turning into Regent Street.

The demonstration was organised by the direct action group UK Uncut and disability campaigners, to protest against the Government’s proposed Welfare Reform Bill, which campaigners say will disadvantage thousands of people by cutting allowances and benefits.
