Dementia sufferers more likely to be diagnosed with urinary or fecal incontinence
August 27th 2013
Patients with a diagnosis of dementia have approximately three times the rate of diagnosis of urinary incontinence, and more than four times the rate of fecal incontinence, compared with those without a diagnosis of dementia, according to a study in this week’s issue of PLOS Medicine by Robert Grant (Kingston University and St. George’s, University of London) and colleagues. Furthermore, patients with dementia and incontinence were more likely to receive incontinence medications and indwelling catheters than those with incontinence but without dementia, the authors state.
The authors analyzed records of patients in The Health Improvement Network (THIN) database, a database of nearly 500 UK primary care practices. They extracted data on 54,816 people aged 60 years with a diagnosis of dementia and an age-gender stratified sample of 205,795 people without a diagnosis of dementia from 2001 to 2010. The THIN database does not distinguish nursing home (care home) residents from those who live in their own homes.
Why is it that the Dementia Friendly Community initiative attracts a mere pittance of funding?

Dementia Friendly Communities ……… half a day a week or what?
It’s taken me a couple of days to start to write this blog.
I’m a left handed Sagittarian (for those of you who want to know), I’m not a placid or patient person and there are some things that really annoy me.
And I do mean really annoy me, even though I try very hard to take an unbiased view, make allowances and tell myself it isn’t the end of the earth.
So here goes…. my blog or rant, depends how you see it, for the Bank Holiday weekend.

OXFORDSHIRE churches which make themselves welcoming to dementia sufferers could be recognised in a new award scheme.
Just as churches which offer events, services and support for young people and children can be accredited as youth and child-friendly or family-friendly churches, the idea is that Anglican churches in the Diocese of Oxford meeting certain criteria could receive dementia-friendly church awards.
The idea is the brainchild of the Rev Dr Joanna Collicutt, who is the Spiritual Concern for Older People adviser for the diocese.

It is in part inspired by Prime Minister David Cameron‘s dementia-friendly communities initiative launched a couple of years ago.
