The other night, my husband and I were watching television when someone on a commercial stated something about retiring at age 90. I didn’t hear the rest of the dialogue because I was rolling on the floor and laughing too hard at the visual images I was getting of my own future. As a baby boomer that is not independently wealthy, I fully expect that the words, “I’m retired” will not be coming from my lips in this lifetime.

A support scheme to help carers in north Cumbria begins today.

The eight-week Sunflower Group led by the Eden Valley Hospice will cover a range of topics to help carers deal with some of the difficulties they will face.

Janet Ferguson, chief executive at the hospice on the outskirts of Carlisle, said: “The Sunflower Group is something we do on a regular basis, a recurrent programme. It has been designed to help people cope with the situations they will come across as they deal with a family member who has a serious illness and so that they are looking after themselves and are able to prioritise their needs too.”

This is the story of Tony and his wife Christine who have been raising Christine’s granddaughter Hollie since birth due to her mother’s drug and alcohol misuse.

The couple have never received any financial support for looking after Hollie apart from child benefit and child tax credit. Despite the very difficult relationship with Hoolie’s mother they receive no support with managing contact.
