KING’S LYNN: Cancer patient loses benefits after DWP lists her as dead.
Eileen Callaby is angry that her benefits were stopped after the DWP thought she was dead.
Weeks after surviving a cancer operation, a patient received a letter stating that her benefits had been cancelled as she had died.
Eileen Callaby says her recovery from lung cancer is being hampered due to the financial worry created by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) stopping her benefits after mistakenly listing her as dead.
Mrs Callaby , 52, who lives with her son Peter in Queen Elizabeth Avenue, Gaywood, even had to visit Lynn Job Centre on Monday with her birth certificate to prove that she is alive.
She is waiting for to start chemotherapy after having sections of her lung removed in September.
Mrs Callaby is calling for improvements in the DWP after section failed to communicate with another that she was alive.
She said: “I don’t understand where it came from that I had died.

Councils will cut £10bn from their social care budgets over this spending review period, MPs have been told.
The figure was revealed at a health select committee hearing on Tuesday by John Jackson, chair of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services’ resources network.
Mr Jackson told MPs that his figure raised serious concerns about the future of social care funding.
“Adult social care is the largest part of council budgets and they will have to look for savings from it”, he said, warning that the further council tax freeze announced this month would put more pressure on care budgets.
Disabled fearful of income loss, campaigners say
Eight-in-10 people claim losing their disability living allowance (DLA) will drive them into isolation, a coalition of 90 disabled people’s groups says.
In a survey of more than 4,500 UK disabled people, the Hardest Hit campaign found nine in 10 fear the DLA loss will be bad for their health.
The DLA is to be replaced in 2013 by the personal independence payment.
The government said money was too often wasted on overpayments where people’s conditions have changed.
At Prime Minister’s Questions last week, David Cameron spoke of the plan to give more money to “severely disabled children” and a lower amount for less disabled people, which “showed the right values and the right approach”.
