Message from a carer to Staffordshire County Council re respite

Complex situation for respite carers

Monday, January 02, 2012

IN NOVEMBER I received a letter from the social services department inviting me to a meeting, to offer my opinion as a parent/carer into the plans to offload respite care for young adults with a learning disability into the private sector.

The meeting would take place on an industrial estate and I would be granted a 20 minute slot. As one who does not frequent industrial estates I had to ring to find out where it was.

Warning over cuts to care of Norfolk elderly

The concerns have been raised after Age UK director Michelle Mitchell yesterday warned elderly care will be plunged into “absolute crisis” by the government decreasing the cash available to council social care budgets.

She added this could end up costing more in the long run, with thousands of older people ending up in hospital rather than receiving care at home.

And Lady Joyce Hopwood, chairman of the Norfolk Older People’s Strategic Partnership Board, said more vulnerable and frail people were missing out on the help they needed.

She added that this was because councils and charitable groups were attempting to manage decreasing budgets and increasing workloads.

Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, yesterday refused to rule out a new tax on pensioners to pay for the soaring costs of old age and acknowledged that more funding was needed.

His advisers admitted that key parts of the planned reformed system of care for elderly and disabled adults may not come into effect before 2025.
