Social worker Pam Stopforth finds out what it is to be lonely and isolated for a week

Liverpool-based social worker Pam Stopforth is one of 11 people experiencing social isolation as if she were an isolated older person in a social experiment called Isolation Week.

Organised by the charity Friends of the Elderly, the event takes place from today (Monday) through to Sunday with the aim of raising awareness of the effects of social isolation.

Elderly people cared for in their homes were told today to prepare for ever-worsening neglect because of brutal government cuts.

Charity Age UK spoke out after the Equality and Human Rights Commission revealed that basic human rights are being overlooked even before the axe falls.

The commission is conducting a major inquiry into home care in England.

It is set to publish its findings in November.

However it has already identified a number of major problems such as high staff turnover.

One woman said she had 32 different carers over a two-week period.

Lancashire care home abuses revealed

Twenty-three carers across Lancashire have been dismissed or are under investigation for abusing and mistreating patients, it has been revealed.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed eight cases involving physical abuse, four concerning financial and emotional abuse and five cases of verbal abuse across Lancashire County Council’s 17 care homes over the past two years.
