Cancer sufferer Heather Cutting, 48, and her partner Trevor Collings, 47, tied the knot at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital today, in front of 40 of their closest family and friends.

The couple, who met 11 years ago when Mr Collings parked outside her previous home in Gimmingham, moved to Chapel Road at Roughton eight years ago after finding their “dream bungalow”.

They had almost finished renovating their home when she became ill on New Year’s Eve last year.

Hammerton Court, next to the Julian Hospital, in Colman Road, Norwich, has 36 bedrooms, has been purpose built for dementia care and represents the largest single investment in dementia care in Norfolk yet.

The Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust building, which was officially opened by Jenny Lay, the lord mayor of Norwich, was named in the memory of the late Cressida Hammerton, who worked closely with the trust and dementia services in Norfolk following the death of her husband, Peter, who had the condition.

John Batt, who has had dementia for three years and lives in Beccles, read a poem he had written about the building at the opening.

Mr Batt said: “I think it’s beautiful and I fell in love with it when I first saw it.

“If I could get in here I would because it’s such a lovely place.”

Shake-up for meals on wheels in Norwich

Volunteers could be drafted in to stop vulnerable elderly residents feeling lonely and isolated when a council-run service ends within weeks.

Norfolk County Council is to stop directly providing meals-on-wheels in Norwich next month.

It is feared this could lead to older people receiving fewer visitors and losing vital contact with others, plus paying more for their food.

Talks between Age UK Norwich and the council are continuing to see if a replacement service, which could involve more volunteers delivering meals, can be developed.
