Social care shake up for thousands in Norfolk

Thousands of elderly and disabled people are set for a huge social care shake-up within weeks, after councillors agreed a radical shift in how Norfolk’s vulnerable are looked after. 

Members of Norfolk County Council’s controlling cabinet agreed yesterday to shift the authority away from running day centres.

The council will instead hand personal budgets to people who use those services so they can choose what to spend the money on.

This will leave some MS patients with no effective treatment choice.

A mother-of-two who has been taking the first pill to treat multiple sclerosis has told of her “dread” of being without the drug, after it was initially rejected by the medicines watchdog.

 

 

“I dread the thought of it not being available to me and this decision makes me sad and cross that it won’t be generally available to anyone else.”

In draft guidance, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) has rejected the drug fingolimod, which has been trialled in Norwich, recommending it is not made freely available to NHS patients in England.

Break is to close its Rainbow Holiday Centre in Sheringham, once the flagship of the major north Norfolk-based charity.

Rainbow’s 30 staff were told this week that the Hooks Hill Road centre will close in January 2013 after providing a welcome to thousands of children and adults with disabilities for the past 38 years.
