Official NHS data has shown that more than 20 per cent of patients in some organisations suffer from problems such as bed sores or suffer accidents such as falls while on wards.

Nationally just under one in ten, or around 41,000 people, were harmed, but this masks wide variation in individual hospitals, it was found.

The Department of Health has set a target to deliver “harm-free care” to 95 per cent of patients “by 2012”.

Officials admitted around 200,000 patients suffer common avoidable problems over the course of a year.

The NHS Safety Thermometer, launched in April, gathers data from all NHS hospitals covering patient problems such as bed sores and patient falls that can be avoided with good care.

Trust warned over poor patient care at Dewsbury hospital

A cash-strapped hospital trust has been told to improve standards of patient care at Dewsbury and District Hospital.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has issued a formal warning to The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust following a visit last month.

Inspectors found some patients on ward two “were not being treated with dignity, respect or consideration”.

Stephen Eames, the trust’s interim chief executive, said he “apologised unreservedly” to affected patients.

NHS workers have accused senior staff of exercising a “two-tier system”, after top brass received bumper bonuses while frontline employees fight for their jobs.

A health boss whose staff are facing drastic changes to pay and conditions has also come under fire for “showing complete disharmony” with colleagues after posting details of his new boat on the internet.

Shaun Clee, chief executive of 2gether NHS Foundation Trust in Gloucester, took to micro-blogging site Twitter to inform his “followers” of the purchase, made during a recent trip to St Austell in Cornwall.

He wrote: “Round trip to St Austell. Sea trial resulted in new boat – oops!”
