King’s Lynn couple fight for change in law to help disabled people

A Lynn couple are calling for a change in the law to force businesses to improve the toilet facilities that are available on offer to disabled people.

Trevor Smith is a carer for his wife, Susan, who has severe cerebral palsy and is a wheelchair user.

Because of her condition, Mrs Smith only has strength in her right arm and needs a handrail to hold onto when she goes to the toilet.

But the couple, of King George V Avenue, say not enough is being done to ensure that suitable facilities are provided for disabled customers.

A tribunal has overturned a decision on the bedroom tax, setting a precedent that could force some councils to rethink how they decide who needs a room for an overnight carer.

Solicitor Giles Peaker  (photo) said he would not be surprised if ‘a fair number of councils’ had calculated who needs a spare room for overnight care in the same way as Eastleigh Council did.

Scheme that should be continued

A SUCCESSFUL travel scheme which helps youngsters in Sudbury and Doveridge with special educational needs get out and about could be continued.

Derbyshire County Council’s training helps youths with reduced mobility, learning difficulties or low confidence use public transport.

Its contract with the National Star Foundation is due to end in September next year but a proposal to go out to tender for three years of the training will go to the cabinet meeting for children and young people on Tuesday.
