A “LIFELINE” for carers in Warwickshire could be ripped from under their feet in new plans to make them pay to take breaks from their demanding roles. Under the controversial proposals, Warwickshire County Council would charge for home-based short breaks, which allow family carers to relax for between six and 72 hours while care is provided to their loved one by someone else. Currently carers looking after either a person aged 65 or over, an older person with dementia, or a person with a physical disability, can make use of the home-based service – provided in south Warwickshire by Age UK – for free.

It comes after Bristol police arrested and later bailed four people over the treatment of patients with learning difficulties at Winterbourne View.

Care Services Minister Paul Burstow said he was determined to strengthen safeguards for vulnerable adults.

NHS South West said it had been “appalled” by the issues raised.
