YOUNG people in Winchester who act as carers will be given the chance by Media Trust and Sainsbury’s to tell their stories on camera.
Winchester Young Carers has been selected for the Untold Stories scheme, which matches small charities with top filmmakers to create films demonstrating their work.
The charity aims to improve the lives of young people, providing them with support and opportunities to learn life-skills.
More recognition for the role of carers
Saba Salman looks at how one Dudley borough council project is making it easier for carers to get practical and financial support, and bringing them out of the woodwor
Janet Down only realised she was a full-time carer for her disabled husband when she fell ill a few years ago and could not look after him. Suffering back pain from lifting and depression from coping unsupported, her inability to care for 65-year-old Dave exposed just how much she did for him. This prompted her to recognise her role, accept she needed help and find leaflets about caring at her library.
Carer aware, an innovative project that Down subsequently participated in and designed by Dudley borough council, is making it easier for carers like Down to get support. The online mini-training toolkit offers an explanation of carers’ rights, better access to support and reassurance that professionals are recognising carers’ issues. Down now champions the scheme as chair of Dudley Carers Forum. “Knowing how and what the carer is entitled to receive is empowering,” she says.

GENEROUS primary school children have done their bit to help the Lynn News Young Carers Appeal.
Eastgate Primary School children at Lynn raised £133.12 during collections at their Christmas performances.
The Lynn News is working with West Norfolk Carers to raise £100,000 to help ease the load for children, who are caring for sick relatives.
The appeal will be helping youngsters, aged between five and 18, who look after family members suffering from physical disabilities, serious illnesses as well as mental health and substance abuse problems.
Money will be used to pay for trips out for the youngsters along with transport to carers group meetings.
