EDUCATION, social work and cleansing services will all be hammered by the brutal £50million cuts at Scotland’s biggest council.

Public sector workers’ union Unison last night said it would be crazy to think the axe will not fall on the frontline.

Glasgow City Council have said they will have to make the cuts over the next two years. It will mean 1000 jobs going by 2015 on top of 3000 staff who have left since 2010.

Breaks: The £1m fund will be used to provide short breaks for carers.

More than 2600 carers will benefit from £1m of funding for short breaks, the Scottish Government has announced.

The latest round of cash from the Creative Breaks programme will support in excess of 60 projects, giving carers the chance to enjoy activities such as residential weekend stays and daytime breaks.

The more than 190 projects supporting about 9000 carers have benefited from funding for short breaks in the past.

Public health minister Michael Matheson said there were “considerable pressures on adult and young carers” and it was important the government supported them.

A charter which aims to provide additional support to carers across Aberdeenshire has been endorsed by local councillors.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Social Work and Housing Committee agreed to withdraw charges to carers for community respite, as well as respite provided by dementia support workers and direct carer services at a recent meeting.
