Teachers, bin men and carers all to fall under budget axe

“Services for the disabled and elderly will be scaled back in ways that will really affect people’s lives.

UNION bosses have warned that front line services will be right in the firing line thanks to multi-million pound cuts.

Cleaning is sure to be hit by cuts

EDUCATION, social work and cleansing services will all be hammered by the brutal £50million cuts at Scotland’s biggest council.

Public sector workers’ union Unison last night said it would be crazy to think the axe will not fall on the frontline.

Glasgow City Council have said they will have to make the cuts over the next two years. It will mean 1000 jobs going by 2015 on top of 3000 staff who have left since 2010.

Brian Smith, secretary of Unison’s Glasgow branch, said: “Another 1000 jobs will mean one in five jobs have gone in four or five years.

“To find this level of savings goes way beyond counting the paper clips and making efficiency savings.

“This is about large scale job losses and cuts to frontline services.

“Social work, education and cleansing services are going to be hit badly because they are the big three and where huge amounts can be cut by cutting services.

“Social work and education make up 70 per cent of spend, so they are obviously going to take huge hits.

“I don’t think schools will close but teachers and support staff are likely to go, as will the amount of resources schools have.

The education system is likely to have less resources

“Services for the disabled and elderly will be scaled back in ways that will really affect people’s lives.

“Daycare centres are areas where big chunks of money can be saved by simply wiping out the service.

“In the cleansing departments, jobs will go, meaning that the streets may not be cleaned as often as they should.”

Smith said the cuts should serve as a rallying call to fight the UK government’s economic policy.

He added: “If MSPs were to say they will not accept these cuts then the trade unions would support them all the way.”

Glasgow council have insisted they will still spend £15million on revamping George Square outside their HQ for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
