Cuts to Norfolk adult social care, which critics say could increase homelessness, agreed – by narrowest of margins.

Millions of pounds of cuts, including for spending on independent living for young and old, have been backed by councillors – by the narrowest of margins.

The decision to cut more than £11m, including more than £5m from funding for services which support vulnerable people, was today agreed by Norfolk County Council’s adult social care committee.

But an attempt by opposition councillors to stop cuts to housing support was only blocked thanks to the casting vote of Conservative chairman Bill Borrett.

New dementia support service opens in Cromer

 A new telephone service aims to help people find out what support is available to them when a relative is diagnosed with dementia.

The scheme, which was launched at Danbury Lodge, in Cromer, yesterday, will give people the opportunity to speak to someone for advice.

It is hoped that the service will benefit carers who struggle to use the internet, individuals living with dementia and local businesses.

Laura Lodge, head of the dementia unit, said: “I think there is a big demand for this, especially in our local area. The idea came from carers who said that when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia, they don’t know who to talk to or where to get advice from.”

Free travel petition for carers who give up their lives to look after for others

Petition to the Scottish Government

A PAISLEY woman who has been campaigning for free travel for carers is gearing up to submit her petition to the Scottish Government.

Amanda Macdonald cares for her mum, who was diagnosed with early onset dementia when she was 48.

She has received support from Fixers UK, a charity encouraging young people to make positive changes and a Young Adult Carers Forum.

However, the next step for 26-year-old Amanda is almost set to present her petition to the transport minister and McGill’s buses.
