A WEEK of events will highlight and celebrate the contribution that carers make and provide greater support for those unaware of the services and benefits they may be entitled to.

Three in five people will be a carer at some point in their lives, meaning that one day the true face of a carer may be yours.

Carers receive £55.55 per week, the lowest benefit of its kind and only available for those who care more than 35 hours per week, equating to approximately £1.58 per hour.

Elizabeth McPherson, chief officer of Scarborough and Ryedale Carers Resource said: “There are 11,304 known carers in Whitby and the Borough of Scarborough.

“Carers Week is about highlighting the concerns and difficulties carers are experiencing in everyday life.

“Carers miss out on many things we all take for granted – family life, holidays or nights out with friends because of their caring responsibilities.

“If they do find time to get a break many are too tired to enjoy or take advantage of time away.”

Carers Resource will have a display and information stand in Spring Vale doctor’s surgery from Monday 13 June to Thursday 16 June.

The display stand will be manned by Carers Resource staff to give out information.

Information leaflets will also be available for anyone to take away throughout the week.

Mrs McPherson added: “Carers Resource is a free organisation offering information, advice and support to all carers, all they need to do is pick up the phone and call us.”

Carers Resource can be contacted by calling (01723) 850155 or by emailing staff@carersresource.net.
