Prescriptions up 20p despite calls for charges to be cut

The cost of prescriptions in England will rise from £7.20 to £7.40 per item, the Government has announced.

The move will come as a blow to campaigners, including the British Medical Association (BMA), who have been calling for charges to be scrapped altogether.

The Department of Health has also announced that dental charges will rise.

England is the only part of Britain still charging for prescriptions. They are free in Wales and Northern Ireland and will be free in Scotland from April 1.

Eric Pickles has said he is considering using the law to prevent local authorities passing on “disproportionate” cuts to charities.

The Communities Secretary told voluntary groups they were entitled to expect that cuts to their grants would not be proportionally bigger than cuts to local authority budgets overall.
