Nearly 80 per cent of unpaid carers in the South East are worried about cuts to services, according to new research for Carers Week 2011 (13-19 June). Almost half don’t know how they will cope as the axe falls on some of the vital support they rely on.
The cuts to services compound the financial sacrifice people make when they start looking after someone who is ill, frail or disabled. Three quarters of those surveyed say they are worse off financially since taking on their caring responsibilities.
When people are forced onto benefits they find that Carer’s Allowance is the lowest benefit of its kind. leaving The Carers Week research shows that two thirds of carers are surprised at how little help they get from the government.

THE mother of a severely disabled Bournemouth man, who was told his care is being cut 70 per cent, will fight the decision with legal specialists.
Lorraine Zavadil will be using the same solicitors who won a test case at the high court against Birmingham Council.
She told Tuesday night’s full council meeting: “Is it not reasonable to expect a resolution that would not take this council into a protracted legal battle?”

I am an official carer for my wife, who is registered as severely disabled. For this I get no Carer’s Allowance whatsoever. I am 76 and under duress, doing the best I can like thousands of others unpaid carers countrywide.
I asked Social Services for a stand-in shower to be installed as I have to help my wife into and out of the bath.
The SS gave me another number to ring. This number gave another and so on.
