North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb and boxing legend Frank Bruno team up to help young people with mental health problems
It is a cause close to both their hearts, and now a former Government minister and a boxing legend are teaming up to support young people with mental health problems.
Mr Lamb has contacted Minister for Civil Society Rob Wilson to promote the initiative following a meeting with Mr Bruno in North Walsham last week.
He is hoping it may be possible for 15-17 year olds involved in National Citizen Service to support the work of the proposed foundation.
“I know Frank quite well through our previous joint action on mental health,” said Mr Lamb.
“We have worked together on a number of things and I have a high regard for him. He has been very open speaking about his mental health challenges.
Health bosses close to launching new system for mental health helpline
An extra staff member will be added to take additional calls to the Mind mental health helpline, as health bosses hammer out the final details for a new service.
The helpline, which faced closure earlier this year due to a lack of funds, is being merged with the Wellbeing helpline as part of the region’s mental health trust’s Wellbeing Service after chiefs agreed to invest an uncon-firmed amount of money towards the service.
As part of the scheme the Wellbeing helpline, available to call-ers with less acute conditions than those who ring Mind’s helpline, will have its opening hours extended.
Both helplines are to operate under the same number, with staff from either helpline able to answer both sets of callers.

Government pledges to put more money into mental health are being broken because the NHS is not passing the money on to the NHS trusts that treat patients, a new report has revealed.
Care for people who need psychological help will suffer unless a chasm is bridged between ministerial promises and cash reaching the frontline, campaigners warn.
The disparity also threatens to undermine the historic change in 2012 that compelled the NHS in England to give physical and mental health equal priority or “parity of esteem”. Although mental ill-health accounts for 28% of the total burden of disease, it gets just 13% of the NHS’s budget.
