CARERS are being urged to stand up against Worcestershire County Council after its decision to increase social care charges.

Maureen Rickards, of Rubery, and Margaret Strong, of Barnt Green, were among those to express their anger at the proposals.
Margaret, who cares for her 94-year-old father, told us: “The council won’t listen to the carers until we come out in force because we are lonely, isolated people in dots around the country.”

Cells ‘resistant to stroke damage’

Researchers hope the findings could lead to new ways of treating the third largest killer in the UK, which can restrict the ability to move or speak for those who survive a stroke.

Scientists have identified nerve cells in people’s brains that do not get damaged during a stroke and believe they could hold the key to protecting other cells that are starved of oxygen in such an event.

Researchers at the University of Bristol found that some nerve cells in the brain are immune to damage following the drop in blood supply and nutrients that occurs during a stroke when blood vessels in the head rupture.

New test to identify which patients should take statins

Thousands of patients could be needlessly taking statins even though they are at low risk of suffering heart attacks or stroke, research suggests.

Scientists say they have found a much better way to work out which people are in danger of developing heart problems.

Half of the middle-aged adults they studied were found to have no coronary artery calcium, and only a handful of them went on to suffer a heart attack or a stroke.

They say the findings have “important public health implications” and could mean large cost savings if the cholesterol-lowering drugs are prescribed only for those whose health would genuinely be improved by taking them.
