A minister for older people would be a victory for all generations

Intergenerational squabbling over housing is missing the point, all generations should welcome the Commons’ decision

“This isn’t about pitting old against young,” said Anchor chief executive Jane Ashcroft

With the media drawing battle lines between young and old, last week’s vote in the Commons urging the government to consider appointing a minister for older people could be seen as a victory for the greys.

The debate, prompted by a 137,000-strong petition presented to Number 10 in November, follows increasingly frenzied reporting about which generation is faring the worst in the economic crisis. But, as attendees at a Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) consultation on housing policies for all generations heard, such intergenerational squabbling is missing the point.

The consultation, a result of a partnership between St George’s House and the JRF, brought together senior figures to consider what a fair housing deal across the generations would look like.

Decision on Hull carers service to be reviewed

Carers in Hull face an uncertain future

A DECISION to award a new £1.5 million contract providing support services for carers in Hull is to be reviewed.

The city council announced in June it was extending its current contract with the Carers’ Centre charity for another two months after concerns were raised over the tendering process.

Now scrutiny councillors have agreed to a call-in request over the move to award the contract to another provider.

It means the decision will have to be reconsidered by corporate director Trish Dalby, who was given delegated responsibility by the council’s cabinet to award the three-year contract.

The issue could also go back to the cabinet if council leader Councillor Steve Brady agrees.

Ms Dalby opted to award the contract to the City Healthcare Partnership (CHP), a new community interest company set up two years ago as offshoot of the city’s NHS primary care trust.

Dementia sufferers wait for a year for diagnosis: report

Dementia sufferers are waiting up to a year for a diagnosis, MPs have warned, as they called for an end to ‘shocking variation’ in standards around the country.

People with memory problems often think it is an inevitable part of ageing and do not go to their GP, a report on dementia said.

Fewer than half of people thought to have dementia have been formally diagnosed and those who have been seen may have waited anything from a few weeks to a year, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia has found.

The average wait for an appointment in a memory clinic, which is a key part of the diagnostic process, is three months, the report said.
