Tax on carers and the disabled is not fair!

A tax on carers: Charities say 420,000 disabled people will be hit by bedroom tax

Spare rooms are essential for many households with disabled people as they give a carer a space of their own

Thousands of disabled people could lose their homes and be plunged into debt thanks to the bedroom tax, charities say.

Anyone in a council or housing association property will have their housing benefit cut by 14% if they have a spare room and by 25% if they have two or more spare rooms.

But campaigners say 420,000 disabled people, their families and carers will be hit harder by the changes in April.

CARERS are being helped to stay on the road during bad weather with special packs.

Winter driving packs were handed out by Amey, Sheffield Council’s highways contractor, at a meeting of Sheffield Carers’ Forum at the United Reformed Church, Norfolk Street.

Some 300 packs have been donated for carers, including a mug so drivers can take a warm drink with them on their journey, some de-icer, a mini ice scraper, and a tax disc holder featuring winter driving safety tips.

Chris Morris, Amey operations director, said: “We w know how important it is for people who are carers to be able to get out and about.

“I hope these packs will give them a hand.”

Carer’s Assessments – know your rights
February 14, 2013

Caring for someone who has additional needs due to their age, illness or disability is a vey difficult job.

The law says that if you provide a ‘substantial’ amount of care to someone on a ‘regular’ basis you have a freestanding right to a carer’s assessment. This applies to carers of any age who provide care to adults or disabled children.

In addition, carers should be included and consulted during the care assessments of the person that they look after.
