The life of one of Norfolk’s great heroines was celebrated by villagers from her birthplace and visitors from around the world at a weekend of events.

Saturday marked 98 years since the death of nurse Edith Cavell by firing squad, after she was found to have helped some 200 soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during the first world war.

The occasion was marked by an Edith Cavell festival in Swardeston, which included an exhibition of memorabilia, talks, fancy-dress guided tours of the village and even a presentation by a descendant of one of the men saved by the heroic nurse.

Robert Tunmore is the second cousin, once removed, of Sgt Jesse Tunmore, of the 1st Norfolks, who was helped to cross the border into Holland by Edith Cavell in August 1914 after he was captured by the Germans.

The 53-year-old, who is a nurse in London, has begun a project to unite the descendants of the ‘Cavell 200’ and to raise funds for the Cavell Nurses Trust, which supports nurses in need.

A paralysed woman claims a shortage of suitable carers could force her into residential care.

Quadriplegic Christine Maksymowicz, of Cherry Hinton Road, Cambridge, said she has been left without a live-in carer despite needing round-the-clock assistance.

She told the News she is being looked after by a district nurse while she waits for private care agency Pulse to provide a new carer.

However, the 60-year-old claims the changes have affected her quality of life and meant she has gone a week without going to the toilet.

She said: “The district nurses said they will only deal with my bowel movements twice a week, so if I can’t go on the day they come, then I won’t be able to go until the next week.”

Mrs Maksymowicz now fears she may have to go into residential care.

Paul Burstow, a former care minister, said that homes need to be made “fit for the rock and roll generation”, who have been put off them by the experience of having their parents’ generation in them.

Mr Burstow, who chaired the committee of MPs and peers scrutinising the Government’s Bill to reform the system, will announce a commission of experts tomorrow to design a new model.
