Hospice’s joy as new centre opens doors

STAFF, patients and volunteers at St Richard’s Hospice in Worcester have welcomed the opening of its near-£1million Snowdrops Community Care Centre.
The new wing to the charity’s Wildwood Drive headquarters was funded by a £600,000 grant from the Department of Health and donations, and will allow staff to support extra patients in the community, as well more carers and family members.

Millions of people are to be allowed to take a simple test that could significantly lower their risk of developing bowel cancer.
As many as 3,000 lives could be saved every year and many diseases could be detected earlier, saving the NHS money, by the decision of the UK National Screening Committee to recommend the procedure for all those aged between 55 and 59.
Figures suggest that using a short one-off test for bowel cancer among middle-aged Britons could reduce incidence rates by 33 per cent and death rates by 43 per cent.
Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, said: “Recent trial results of this method of detecting and removing polyps before they develop into bowel cancer can truly be called a breakthrough.

I am launching a volunteer project here in the US to provide women who’ve undergone mastectomies with the option of knit, crocheted or fabric prosthetic breasts (with a less ‘medical’ look to them, and an opportunity for these women to process their journey in color and texture, to express themselves, to feel feminine, strong, average, wild, balanced, or any other way they wish to express). In my research I have come across many references to breast models for lactation training in the UK.
