More needs to be done to protect people from failing care services in England, a report says.
The National Audit office warns greater safeguards are needed when a firm runs into financial trouble as happened recently with Southern Cross homes.
It says there are shortcomings in the government reforms to how services are funded.
The Department of Health says it is already considering whether to oversee the £23bn market more losely.
Social care users ‘need more help’
The public sector auditor has warned of shortcomings in the Government’s social care reforms, saying many users are struggling to cope with the new system.
Under the “personal budgets” scheme, local authorities give cash direct to users to choose their own care services, rather than having the council decide for them.
