Sisters support the Memory Café in Chard

THERE was a big boost for the Memory Café in Chard this week – thanks to the fundraising efforts of three sisters who are keen volunteers for the service.

A cheque for £367 was presented to the Alzheimer’s Society at 11am yesterdat in the Guildhall, following a tea party organised by Alaine Budge, Barbara Bagg and Maureen Chubb back on Sunday, July 3.

It is the second year the sisters have organised a party – with half the funds going to the Memory Café and the other half will go to the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment (SURE) at the Beacon Centre in Taunton.

The Memory Café meets at the Guildhall every other Wednesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm and provides social activity and information to support people with dementia and their carers, without the need to go for a formal referral.

Jo Taswell, locality development officer, said: “We know there is still a big stigma and people are afraid of the term dementia – but people are a lot more accepting of it now and there’s so much support available for people living in the community.

“We need to break the fear down and make people understand there is support out there.”

Alaine, Barbara and Maureen were thanked for their support by Jo and by social events co-ordinator Becky Marsh.

Jo added: “They have had experience and have been volunteering at the café since it started two or three years ago and have come to almost every single session. All of our volunteers are superb and they work really well together.”
