HARD-WORKING carers who look after people suffering from cancer were treated to a special getaway.

An outdoor experience session was held at Ivy Farm, in East Mersea, with survival expert John Wills, on Saturday.

The initiative has put on with the support of Colchester Hospital University NHS Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support and Greenpath Ventures.

It was the second time an outdoor experience day for carers has been held at the farm.

One of the organisers, Debbie Farthing, said: “The weather was not on our side and it tipped down.

“Luckily John put on a number of other activities, such as picking apples at the Ivy Far6.m orchard and pressing them to make juice.

“They also had a go at filleting fish and were able to cook it themselves over an open fire.

“They also spent time with rare breed animals. Because of the weather it was mostly farm-based activities, but everyone really enjoyed the day.

“It gave them time out from their normal caring activities.”

The first outdoor experience day was held in the summer and the next will take place in January at the tranquil 50-acre site, near the Cudmore Grove nature reserve.
