Most young men trying to carve out a career in the music industry have fame and the wealth that accompanies it as an incentive to push them to the top of the charts.

But for Oritse Williams, founding member of platinum-selling boyband JLS, the motivation was his mother’s battle with the incurable illness multiple sclerosis (MS).

ONE in 12 children, in Gloucestershire, some as young as five, are taking on the role of caring for a family member or friend who has a disability or illness. Here, carer OWEN KNIGHT, from Ashchurch, near Tewkesbury, writes about how too many of them are unrecognised… I AM 14 years old and currently studying for my GCSEs.

But as well as going to school and doing my homework, I also have to look after my Dad Richard who has ME.

Respite time blow hits young carers

Young carers are being deprived of a few hours of valuable respite.

YOUNG people who struggle to fit their school and social lives around caring for sick loved ones have said Oxfordshire County Council is failing to live up to its pledge to support them.

Their claims come as Oxford Carers Centre has refused to bid for a new six-month council contract, saying County Hall’s terms will let down vulnerable young people.
