The Scottish government has allocated £954,000 to fund short breaks for 3,500 young and adult carers across Scotland. Fifty-eight organisations have been offered a share of almost £954,000 for a variety of short breaks projects. This includes 14 groups who help carers purchase their own breaks.

The funding will support young carers and adult carers who care for disabled children, people with dementia, mental health problems and other long-term conditions, substance misuse problems, adults with learning disabilities and adults with physical disabilities.

Young carers get Waitrose support

Waitrose Swaffham community matters co-ordinator Sandra Thompson (centre) presents a cheque for Action for Children Young Carers Group to Christine O’Keeffe (left) and Mary Key watched by children and volunteers.

A GAYWOOD-BASED young carers’ group has been given a £558 donation by a Waitrose store to help continue its vital support to local children.

The money has come from the Swaffham store’s green token scheme, part of its Community Matters initiative, which benefits three local good causes nominated by staff each month.

Young carers get a break -maybe the only one this year!
