PETER PAPWORTH, who looks after his disabled wife, says he’d rather be behind bars than pay the Con-Dem’s bedroom tax.
A HUSBAND who cares for his disabled wife is among the first people to be hit by the Con-Dem Government’s controversial bedroom tax.
Peter Papworth received a demand from Highland Council this week but vows he will go to jail rather than pay.
The 38-year-old lives with wife Amanda, who has multiple sclerosis, in a two-bedroom house in Inverness.
But Highland Council say the couple must fork out £9.96 a week from next month as they have a spare room.
He is now demanding a meeting with local Lib Dem MP Danny Alexander – a leading member of the Coalition Government behind the tax.
Peter said: “My stomach is knotted with anger. To some people it might only be £40 a month but we simply cannot afford it. This will have a devastating effect on us.”

A disabled woman has been forced to leave her home because of a lack of care workers.
Kathleen Robertson, 60, had been able to live in her flat in Ellon with the help of staff from care-at-home providers, Raeburn Healthcare four times a week.
But when Raeburn announced they did not have enough staff to continue their support, Aberdeenshire Council social workers also said they could not find any workers to help her either.
Mrs Robertson, who has multiple sclerosis and is paralysed from the neck down, has been living on her own in a specially-modified flat for three years, but now she has had no choice but to lose her independence and move to nearby Auchtercrag Care Home.

CARER’S in Renfrewshire are being told to take a break after the local authority set aside £200,000 to pay for a new home-based respite care service.
Respite care gives carers a break from the daily routine of looking after loved ones who have long-term health problems or disabilities. It allows them the chance to have a night out, a weekend off or a short holiday.
As the name suggests, the new home-based service allows the person who is being cared for to stay in their own home while their carer takes a well earned rest. The person who is being cared for needs to be over 65 to access the new service but the carer can be any age.
