Patients could be at risk from unregulated ‘cheap’ healthcare workers
Patients could be left at risk from a growing number of unqualified and unregulated healthcare workers, it has been claimed.

There are at least 150,000 healthcare assistants working in hospitals and care homes, often carrying out important roles such as washing and feeding patients, and more are being employed as a cheap alternative to more experienced clinical staff.
But unlike doctors, nurses and midwives, there are no training requirements for healthcare assistants and support staff and no watchdog to discipline those that break rules, meaning that those who are sacked can simply move to another employer.
Cash for new carers’ group
CARERS in Congresbury look set to benefit from some respite as plans for a new group advance.
At a village parish council meeting last week members agreed to give £720 to Crossroads, which offers support, advice and information to carers throughout North Somerset.
The funds will allow carers in the village to meet monthly and can pay for them to take part in activities of their choice.
Bank holidays are not good for family carers or the disabled
Five bank holidays in a 6 week period mean that many thousands of sick, elderly, disabled and their carers are being forced to manage alone without care help,
Even if the agencies or local authoroties can provide care workers on these days, many vulnerable people are unable to afford the extra charges for bank holiday working.
So for all the millions being lavished on the royal wedding, as usual it is the ones who can least afford it who suffer.
