Care homes in England are increasingly struggling to meet the medical needs of their residents, research by the Royal College of Nursing suggests.

The RCN said the situation was being further compounded by the ageing population, which meant residents were developing ever more complex needs.

Norfolk County Council is to stop directly providing meals-on-wheels in Norwich next month.

It is feared this could lead to older people receiving fewer visitors and losing vital contact with others, plus paying more for their food.

Talks between Age UK Norwich and the council are continuing to see if a replacement service, which could involve more volunteers delivering meals, can be developed.

Some doctors are refusing to visit elderly care home residents, a BBC investigation has found.

Instead they are offering a diagnosis over the phone which care home managers say is unsatisfactory and dangerous.

In one case, care home records show a GP refused or reluctantly made a visit to a man suffering from pneumonia on three occasions.

The British Medical Association told the BBC it agreed the quality of care given to care homes could vary.
