Care home residents who pay subsidising the rest, owners admit
At present anyone with assets worth more than £23,500 has no help from the state in funding their care even though some face costs of up to £100,000 a year
Middle class people in care homes are being charged up to £12,000 a year extra to subsidise the cost of those who receive free care, owners have admitted.
More than four out of five care home operators admit they have had to put up prices for those who pay for their own way because of councils cuts – with some suggesting that the difference in cost is now up to 50 per cent.
They say that it amounts to an extra “tax” on those deemed well enough off to pay for care – effectively meaning that they are being charged twice.
But care home operators said they would go out of business if they were not able to charge so-called self-funders higher fees.

TWO sisters have earned their place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest siblings.
Dorrie Richards, who is 108 years and five months old and her sister Marjorie Ruddle, who turned 105 last month, received their certificates during an emotional reunion yesterday.
They had not seen each other for more than two-and-a-half years because it is difficult to transport them between the care homes where they live.
Dorrie is a resident at Whitefriars in Ryhall Road, Stamford. Yesterday two carers from Whitefriars volunteered their time to accompany Dorrie to Park House nursing home in Peterborough to visit her sister and collect her certificate.
Elderly ‘left hungry as care home tried to cut down on shopping bill
Frail elderly people were routinely left without food after their care home ran out of supplies because of an apparent attempt to “cut down the shopping bill”, an inspection has found.

Staff at Lyndhurst Lodge in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leics, told inspectors they had resorted to buying snacks for residents out of their own pockets because of shortages, the health watchdog the Care Quality Commission said.
The home was issued with a formal warning after a highly critical inspection report also found that it was so short-staffed that at times there were not even enough on hand to help frail people to the lavatory.
