Around 30 genetic risk factors for developing multiple sclerosis have been discovered by a UK-led team.

It brings to more than 50 the total number of genetic clues to the disease.

The research, published in Nature, will help identify risk factors and perhaps future treatments or even a cure, said the MS Society.

Most of the genes are linked to immunity, backing the idea that the disease is triggered when the immune system turns against itself.

As a disabled 35 year old lady who suffers from Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis and severely disabled and use a wheelchair fulltime, I need care 24/7 care, this is provided by a paid carer and my mother, I have lots of information about me for them to read and support from my mother who teaches them how to move me and hoist me and how I like to be cared for (I do have rights)

A mother-of-two who has been taking the first pill to treat multiple sclerosis has told of her “dread” of being without the drug, after it was initially rejected by the medicines watchdog.

 

 

“I dread the thought of it not being available to me and this decision makes me sad and cross that it won’t be generally available to anyone else.”

In draft guidance, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) has rejected the drug fingolimod, which has been trialled in Norwich, recommending it is not made freely available to NHS patients in England.
