Is this the loneliest generation?

Carers feel lonely

Sunday 13 January 2013

Government officials have been ordered to find out exactly how lonely Britain’s population is, amid concerns that “the most isolated generation ever” will overwhelm the NHS.

The Department of Health is attempting to measure the extent of “social isolation” in the UK, after warnings that it has sparked spiralling levels of illnesses including heart disease, high blood pressure, dementia and depression.

Research has revealed that loneliness is a growing problem in the UK – particularly among the elderly – with one in three admitting that they sometimes feel lonely. Among older people, more than half live alone, 17 per cent are in contact with family, friends and neighbours less than once a week, and almost five million say the television is their main form of company.

However, the trend is expected to worsen in the coming years. The Office for National Statistics disclosed last year that the number of Britons living alone has risen to a record 7.6 million – one million more than in 1996 and amounting to almost one in three households.

But beyond the personal problems the “loneliness epidemic” presents, ministers have been put on alert over its wider impact – and financial costs. Loneliness is blamed for piling more pressure on to health and social care services, because it can increase the risk of complaints including heart disease and blood clots. Experts also believe it encourages people to exercise less and drink more – and ultimately go to hospital more often and move into residential care at an earlier stage.

Alison Mortimer faces eviction from her home. Alison Mortimer faces eviction from her home.

A CARER who faces eviction after her patient was admitted to a care home has pleaded for more time.

For the last five years Alison Mortimer has been a registered live-in carer for her friend of 17 years, but when he was admitted permanently into a care home she was given notice to leave his council property in Daniell Drive, Shrub End.

Now Colchester Borough Homes have applied to evict Ms Mortimer, 58, from the home as she has not yet been able to find somewhere else to live.

A spokesman for Colchester Borough Homes, who run properties for Colchester Council, said: “As Ms Mortimer is not a tenant it is not possible for her to stay at the property because the tenancy is not transferable in these circumstances.”

Film premiere highlights extra support for Torbay carers

Help for families supporting an older person suffering from depression, anxiety or psychosis.

  1. Carers, patients and healthcare staff from across Torbay and Southern Devon recently came together to celebrate the launch of a new educational film to help families supporting an older person suffering from depression, anxiety or psychosis.
  2. Funded and produced in collaboration between Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust’s Torbay Carers Services and Devon Partnership NHS Trust, the film is the third in a series of DVDs aimed at supporting unpaid carers.

Caring for an Older Person with Depression, Anxiety or Psychosis follows on from two highly successful films about dementia. The films share the experience of living with, and caring for, someone with mental ill health and explore the ways in which people learn to cope with the challenges involved.

This latest film features four couples who have lived with depression, anxiety or a psychotic illness. They openly discuss what happened to them, the effect of their illness on their daily lives and relationships and how they have come through their struggles with ill health. Carers talk about the effect on the person with the illness and on themselves.
