GRANDMOTHER Anne Swartz knows only too well that blood is thicker than water.
The 58-year-old widow from Dumbarton cares for her three grandchildren, as her own kids were unable to cope.
As one of 20,000 kinship carers around the country, she knows the many difficulties faced by those who take young relatives into their care.
And with this week being Carers Week, shes asking for more recognition for the role they play in making sure the most vulnerable of children get the upbringing they deserve.
“I have two children who have got learning difficulties,” she said.
“In 2005, I took care of my daughters eldest daughter, who had just turned five and was two weeks into school.
Unpaid carers suffering a negative impact on health
There are more than 551,000 unpaid carers in the South West.
A Carers Week survey showed two in five unpaid carers in the South West are sacrificing their own health by putting off medical treatment to care for an ill, frail or disabled loved one.
Carers Week (June 18 to 24) is run by a consortium of eight national charities: Age UK; Carers Trust; Carers UK; Independent Age; Macmillan Cancer Support; Marie Curie Cancer Care; MS Society and Parkinson’s UK.
Norfolk carers call for more financial and practical help
Two in five unpaid carers put off medical treatment because of the demands of their role, according to a new survey of 3,400 carers.

Carers’ Week in Norfolk
Staff from a range of agencies will be on-hand with lots of information at Carers’ Week “roadshows” visiting the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust ,The James Paget Hospital, Cromer Hospital and towns throughout Norfolk including Dereham and Acle. In West Norfolk, a Carer’s Week event is taking place in King’s Lynn and Downham Market.
