Flu jab appeal launched in the Highlands

Appeal for flu jab take up in the Highlands

PREGNANT women and people with medical conditions in the Highlands are among those being urged to have an early flu jab.

Over 32,000 people across the region are eligible for the flu jab, which provides protection against the dangerous virus.

Flu is especially hazardous for people aged 65 or over, to those with existing medical conditions, pregnant women and unpaid long-term carers.

“Diabetes UK is calling on both men and women to reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by losing any excess weight

 

Researchers say they have discovered why men may be more likely than women to develop type 2 diabetes – they are biologically more susceptible.

Men need to gain far less weight than women to develop the condition, study findings suggest.

The Glasgow University team found men developed the disease at a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) than women.

They believe distribution of the body fat is important – men tend to store it in their liver and around the waist.

Newport city council has launched a three year programme to reform its adult and children‘s social services and save nearly £11m.

Stewart Greenwell, director of social services at Newport, told Guardian Social Care Network that the programme is as much about modernising and improving services as saving money.
